Our comic strip, "Cloister Canines", is the artistic creation of the superior of the Abbey, Fr. Robert Keffer. Trained in fine arts and comfortable in most media, he is venturing for the first time into cartooning. He expects the characters and presentation to develop over time as he becomes more proficient.
Beginning in cartooning is a real challenge. It's given me real respect for those artists and their creations that I've enjoyed over the years, especially Calvin and Hobbs and The Far Side. Monastic community life is interesting because of the unlikely personalities brought together. There are no two more unlikely dogs than Luxor and Ludwig. They foil each other beautifully. And that's really what monastic charity is all about. Luxor is intelligent and cagey; Ludwig is all dumb innocence -- both like so many monks I've known.
